Indonesia to host world Guangdong community meeting

Around 3,000 Chinese of Guangdong descends from around the world would gather in Jakarta from May 22 to 24, Antara news agency reported Monday. 

The chairman of Indonesian Guangdong Community Federation, Sugeng Prananto, told Antara that the participants would come from more than 100 Guangdong community organizations from all over the world.

The participants would come among others from Mauritius, Argentina, China, the United States, Seychelles, Brazil, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunai Darussalam, the Philippines, Myanmar, Japan, France, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada, Panama, and host Indonesia. 

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to open the meeting. 

Sugeng said Indonesia was appointed to host the meeting at the federation’s 4th conference held in Malaysia in 2007. 

The first such meeting was held in Singapore in 2001. 

Sugeng said the three-day meeting was aimed at strengthening relations among people of Chinese descent from Hakka, Teo Chew, Guang Zhao and Hai Nan ethnic groups.
