At least 600 residents of South Sumatra of Chinese descent have yet to secure Indonesian citizenship, reported Tuesday.

The citizenship issue was revealed at a citizenship decree issuance on Tuesday, where 267 of 382 applicants were officially naturalized as Indonesian citizens.

According to a regional representative of the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, Chairuddin Idrus, most of the new citizens were residents of Pagar Alam and East Ogan Komering Ulu, while the rest were from Muara Enim and Palembang.

The government is still trying to collate information on some 600 ethnic Chinese residing in South Sumatra who have yet to be recognized as Indonesian citizens, Idrus said.
